Safety Sunglasses & Work Sunglasses for Comprehensive Eye Protection Outdoors
Workers on outdoor worksites are not only exposed to site risks and hazards, but also to hot bright sunny conditions and UV radiation. With so many worksites being outdoors, Safety Sunglasses (otherwise known as Work Sunglasses) and Tinted Safety Glasses are essential for workers to manage the bright conditions and protect their eyes from UV radiation as well as site risks and hazards.
Exposure to bright sunlight without Safety Sunglasses commonly causes watering of the eyes, squinting and excessive blinking. This is of particular concern for workers where they need full concentration on the task at hand and associated risks. Safety Sunglasses and Tinted Safety Glasses are designed to provide impact protection like Safety Glasses, and also dim the bright sunlight to allow improved vision and clarity.
At Boost Safety & Workwear, we carry an extensive range of Safety Sunglasses (Work Sunglasses) and Tinted Safety Glasses. With 120+ models, we might even have the largest range of Safety Sunglasses available. Our range includes both economical and premium models. Safety Standards Certified
Safety Sunglasses, Work Sunglasses and Tinted Safety Glasses must meet more stringent safety requirements than fashion sunglasses. For this reason, fashion sunglasses cannot be used for Eye Protection on worksites.
All Safety Sunglasses supplied by Boost Safety & Workwear meet or exceed Safety Standards including Australian, European, US, Canadian and international standards. Please refer to the specifications table and the product data sheet (both on the product page) which outline the standards that the product complies with and has been certified under.
Using Safety Sunglasses for Eye Protection from Onsite Risks & Hazards
Safety Sunglasses are designed to protect workers from:
- Low Velocity Flying Fragments caused by hammering, manual chipping, riveting and handling wire, rocks, bricks and cement; and
- Medium Velocity Flying Objects caused by machining metals, cutting materials and wood working.
Safety Sunglasses also provide some protection from liquid splashes, however it’s recommended that splash certified Safety Goggles should be worn.
Check out the range of Bolle Safety Glasses which offer an extensive range of Safety Sunglasses and Tinted Safety Glasses for use in a wide variety of industries and work environments.
UV Protection
With so many Australian worksites being outdoors, it’s important for workers to manage the bright sunny conditions and protect themselves from UV radiation, as well as onsite risks and hazards. Safety Sunglasses are essential during periods of prolonged exposure to sunlight. Besides visible light, sunlight contains two powerful invisible forms of radiation (1) ultraviolet; and (2) infrared. Continued exposure to these rays can cause serious eye damage. The long-term effects of excessive amounts of UV radiation happen slowly and painlessly, yet can impair vision. Short-and long term damage to the eye includes inflammation of the cornea, cancer, cataracts and pterygium (a fleshy growth on the cornea).
Optometrists recommend that people who spend most of their time outside or work near sand, water or snow should wear Safety Sunglasses, Work Sunglasses or Tinted Safety Glasses that filter out both UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays. Types of Safety Sunglasses
There are several options available for Safety Sunglasses. At Boost Safety & Workwear, with one of, if not the largest range of Work Sunglasses, we offer all options for your selection. No matter the industry or job at hand, we have the right Safety Sunglasses for you!
Safety Sunglasses: Safety Sunglasses come with tinted lenses in a variety of different colours. Most tints have a transmittance of 10 to 25%, which are designed to dim the bright sunlight. The most common lens tints are grey, brown and green.
Tinted Safety Glasses: Tinted Safety Glasses can refer to Safety Sunglasses or Indoor Outdoor Tinted Safety Glasses which usually have a higher light transmittance (around 50%). The lenses used in Indoor / Outdoor safety glasses are designed for both indoor and outdoor use and for other specialty purposes.
Polarised Safety Glasses: Polarised Safety Glasses are designed to eliminate glare and surface reflections in bright conditions. They are especially beneficial in sandy environments, around water, where reflective metal and glass are present, in the snow and for use when driving. Polarised lenses also improve the perception of colours, contrast and depth; reduce eye strain; and help with overall visual comfort. The polarising film is embedded into the lens so it won’t wear away or scratch off the lens.
Photochromic Safety Glasses: Photochromic Safety Glasses adjust to changing light conditions. When the wearer is exposed to sunlight, the lenses darken. Indoors, the opposite occurs and the lenses lighten. Photochromic lenses perform well for those regularly moving between indoor and outdoor environments.
Flash, Mirror & Reflective Coatings: Flash and mirror coatings are designed to reflect heat and are ideal for use outdoors. A thin metallic coating is combined with tinted Safety Sunglasses lenses to produce a mirrored appearance. They are designed for wear under intense glare such as sunlight reflected from sand, water or snow. If you are looking for a pair of Safety Sunglasses with a flash coating, check out the range of safety certified Ugly Fish Sunglasses.
Using Clear Safety Glasses Outdoors
Workers working outside can wear Clear Safety Glasses instead of Safety Sunglasses to protect their eyes from potential impacts and other hazards. Despite this, clear lenses are not effective at protecting the wearer from the effects of bright sunlight. In addition, Clear Safety Glasses do not offer the level of comfort and higher standard of vision outdoors that Safety Sunglasses offer. For these reasons, Clear Safety Glasses should not be used in bright sunlight or for extended periods outdoors during the day.
What to Look for in Safety Sunglasses
- Level of Protection: Choose Safety Sunglasses, Work Sunglasses or Tinted Safety Glasses that provide the protection required according to the onsite risks and hazards.
